Lost generation

-----------Jonathon Reed
I am part of a lost generation,
And I refuse to believe that
I can change the world.
I realize this may be a shock, but
"Happiness comes from within"
It is a lie, and
"Money will make me happy"
So in thirty years, I will tell my children
They are not the most important thing in my life,
My employer will know that
I have my priorities straight because
Work
Is more important than
Family
I tell you this:
Once upon a time
Families stayed together
But this will not be true in my era.
This is a quick fix society
Experts tell me
Thirty years from now, I will be celebrating the tenth anniversary of my divorce.
I do not concede that
I will live in a country of my own making,
In the future,
Environmental destruction will be the norm.
No longer can it be said that
My peers and I care about the Earth.
It will be evident that
My generation is apathetic and lethargic.
It is foolish to presume that
There is hope.

And all of this will come true unless we reverse it.

Lost generation

When I read the poem ,"Lost generation" by "Jonathon Reed" I feel like the main idea is about our generation becoming destructed and ruined. The speaker explains how long ago people in our generation loved each other and people cared about the world, but now people have become selfish only caring about their work and money. This is best proven when in the poem it states "Once upon a time, families stayed together" this best illuminates how long ago people used to love each other. Also when the speaker says " Work, is more important than my family" portrays that the world's people in a couple of years will become selfish only thinking about their work and not their family. Lastly when the author states "Thirty years from now, I will be celebrating the tenth anniversary of my divorce" and "Environmental destruction will be the norm" best proves how the world is going to be destructed and ruined by the people. The people as well will become heartless and selfish because it states that polluting the environment will be normal in a couple of years. At the beginning of the poem I noticed that  the speaker's tone as very confident when the speaker says "I am part of a lost generation. and I refuse to believe that, I can change the world" this portrays how the speaker is confident and ready to change the world as well still has hope of change. Through the middle of the poem the speaker's tone becomes helpless, sad and depressing because the speaker describes how the world is going to change and he is explaining the future causes. Lastly at the end the speaker's tone becomes confident again  because the speaker says "And all this will come true unless we reverse it" so the speaker is trying to send out a persuasive argument of how the world is going to be ruined and he is confident that the people of today can change it from happening.(HOMEWORK 3/19/13)
