Alone

Lying, thinking
Last night
How to find my soul a home
Where water is not thirsty
And bread loaf is not stone
I came up with one thing
And I don't believe I'm wrong
That nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

There are some millionaires
With money they can't use
Their wives run round like banshees
Their children sing the blues
They've got expensive doctors
To cure their hearts of stone.
But nobody
No, nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Now if you listen closely
I'll tell you what I know
Storm clouds are gathering
The wind is gonna blow
The race of man is suffering
And I can hear the moan,
'Cause nobody,
But nobody
Can make it out here alone.

Alone, all alone
Nobody, but nobody
Can make it out here alone.

After I read the poem,"Alone" by "Maya Angelou" it make me feel like the speaker in the poem is poor, can't afford things, treated badly and that he/she think's the world is going to end. I think the author is talking about he/she is going to live in this mad world were everything is getting expensive and that the rich are the ones who can afford everything. The speaker is as well thinking of how to survive is best portrayed when the author write "how to find my soul" meaning how to live in this world. The author might also want to say not all the money in the world can buy happiness and get you out of this mad world . The author best illuminates this when she says "with money they can't use" that money doesn't cost that much to buy happiness and as well to get them happiness.(CLASS WORK 3/13/13)

Phenomenal Woman

Pretty women wonder where my secret lies.
I'm not cute or built to suit a fashion model's size
But when I start to tell them,
They think I'm telling lies.
I say,
It's in the reach of my arms
The span of my hips,
The stride of my step,
The curl of my lips.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

I walk into a room
Just as cool as you please,
And to a man,
The fellows stand or
Fall down on their knees.
Then they swarm around me,
A hive of honey bees.
I say,
It's the fire in my eyes,
And the flash of my teeth,
The swing in my waist,
And the joy in my feet.
I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Men themselves have wondered
What they see in me.
They try so much
But they can't touch
My inner mystery.
When I try to show them
They say they still can't see.
I say,
It's in the arch of my back,
The sun of my smile,
The ride of my breasts,
The grace of my style.
I'm a woman

Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Now you understand
Just why my head's not bowed.
I don't shout or jump about
Or have to talk real loud.
When you see me passing
It ought to make you proud.
I say,
It's in the click of my heels,
The bend of my hair,
the palm of my hand,
The need of my care,
'Cause I'm a woman
Phenomenally.
Phenomenal woman,
That's me.

Phenomenal Women
Maya Angelou
****
I really enjoyed reading the story "Phenomenal Women" by "Maya Angelou" because I feel like the author Maya is writing about how she is admired by others from her natural beauty and how their are women who are jealous and don't believe her. I also think this poem reminds me of the saying I always tell my friends everybody is beautiful in their own ways. I think this because Maya is naturally beautiful and  even if her features aren't model features she is still admired by men. I have learned from this poem that you don't have to be perfect like a model to be admired by others sometimes you have to be your own plain self. Maya's friends being jealous of her and mad at her is best portrayed when the author says, "But when I start to tell them, They think I'm telling lies." this shows how her friends are jealous by not believing her and telling her that she is saying lies. I think the author is explaining her natural beauty when she says,"It's in the reach of my arms,The span of my hips, The stride of my step, The curl of my lips ". This line means that she is explaining that because of her natural hips, her beautiful shaped lips and the ways he walks she is found attractive to men even if she isn't a model's size. Lastly the author when she is found attractive is best proven when she says,"I walk into a room, Just as cool as you please, And to a man,The fellows stand or Fall down on their knees. Then they swarm around me,A hive of honey bees.I say,It's the fire in my eyes,And the flash of my teeth,The swing in my waist,And the joy in my feet.I'm a woman,Phenomenally.Phenomenal woman, That's me."The author here explains that  because she is women and because of her womanly qualities such as her beautiful teeth, smile and curvy hip this  is how she attracts men. Also she explains in what ever type of weather the men are attracted to her in crowds like a group of bees. (HOME WORK 3/13/13)

Dreams

Hold fast to dreams
For if dreams die
Life is a broken-winged bird
That cannot fly.
Hold fast to dreams
For when dreams go
Life is a barren field
Frozen with snow.

*****
I loved reading this poem "Dreams" by "Langston Hughes" it was very simple and to the point and as well was written in a very unique way I liked . For example instead of saying your imagination will end Langston says "Life is a broken-winged bird, that can not fly" he uses similes to make the poem more deep. I think Langston Hughes is trying to say that you should always have dreams and hopes because if you don't then your life is done and still.  I think he shows this when he says, "hold on to dreams  For if dreams die, life is a broken-winged bird." when the author says this he is trying to compare a bird not flying to a person having no imagination and not dreaming. I also think another message Langston Hughes' is trying to send to the reader is that you should always have confidence and never give up. I believe this because when the other says "Hold fast to dreams,For when dreams go, Life is a barren field" he is trying to compare that if you don't dream and give up it is like living in an empty world with no entertainment like an empty piece of farming land.(HOME WORK 3/13/13)

Here Dead We Lie

Here dead we lie
Because we did not choose
To live and shame the land
From which we sprung.

Life, to be sure,
Is nothing much to lose,
But young men think it is,
And we were young.

After reading the poem, "Here Dead we lie", by "Alfred Housman" It made me remember of 911 and all the people who fought for our country and died long ago because they had no option and had to go fight. This reminded me of this poem because the author says "Here dead we lie ,Because we did not choose To live and shame the land" the author is trying to explain that hey are dead now because they had no choice and went to fight for their country. Also if they lived they would be a disgrace to their country. Also I know that they are young because it says "And we were young."  this line shows that the men who died and are dead int he poem are young. This as well makes me compare this poem to the movie "Mulan" because all the young men in each family or man had to go and fight for their country even if they were young or old. They did this because they didn't want to bring shame to their family or country they had no choice just like the men in the poem. (HOME WORK 3/13/13)
